We had a chance to chat with Kim Crawford Wines' Brand Ambassador Matt Deller to discuss the important things in life - wine and food, friends and family, adventure and travel - and got a little insight into what keeps him busy on the road and how he keeps from falling into the ordinary.
What first made you interested in wine?
Who wouldn’t be? There’s so much to be interested in - the history, the vineyards, the people and the beautiful product. A family friend gave me a book on Champagne for my 16th birthday and that ignited the spark.
What are your favourite wines this year at Kim Crawford?
2015 was a spectacular vintage for all varieties but right now, I’m loving our Pinot Gris. Our Sauvignon Blanc just keeps getting better and better, especially with our stunning new Merrifields vineyard contributing even more exotic flavours.
With regard to the wine, the brand and your home base, what inspires you each day?
The people. We genuinely have a fantastic viticultural and winemaking team. It would be easy for Kim Crawford Wines to rest on its laurels but our team is continuously taking huge strides to make our wines even better every year. It’s inspiring!
What is the most memorable part of the world you’ve been to and why?
Segovia, Spain. Incredible to have so much history in such a small area - neat people and delicious wine and tapas. My profession has taken me to lots of crazy places off the beaten trail, but Canada is right up there at the top to be honest. It’s so diverse. I think Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Banff is gorgeous, Toronto is a very dynamic cosmopolitan city and I love the French flair of Quebec and Montreal.
What amazing restaurants around the globe have you had the chance to try?
Arzak in San Sebastien, Spain has to be the best. Incredible flair without being contrived.
Have you had any other culinary experiences that made a lasting impression?
Sashimi style Marlborough King Salmon and steamed green shell mussels from the Marlborough Sounds that morning on a boat with a glass of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc.
What’s an unordinary wine everyone should try?
Kim Crawford Small Parcels Favourite Homestead Pinot Gris. Only 500 cases made, from a single hillside block, fermented and matured partially in Acacia barrels that naturally lift the spices and florals of the variety. Amazing!
How do you add extra excitement to your home parties?
Actually, I go straight to the Kim Crawford Facebook page. It has amazing entertaining ideas, décor tips and cocktail recipes. My favorite cocktail is the Kim Crawford Smash which has our Sauvignon Blanc, lemon, mint and simple syrup. Definitely refreshing and undoes the ordinary.
What is your favourite souvenir you’ve collected in your travels?
My mushroom poster. It seems weird but I love foraged mushrooms and this has all of them charted out. My wife hates it so it’s on my home office wall.
What’s an uncommon food you think everyone should brave at least once?
Paua - it’s New Zealand abalone and so delicious!
What makes you an extraordinary person?
I think we’re all extraordinary in our own way. We’re all happiest when we are true to ourselves and let our uniqueness shine.
